The Challenge
Australian homeowners needed a unified solution to manage multiple smart devices and systems, facing compatibility issues and complex setup processes.

We built a home automation platform that connects smart devices from different manufacturers and puts them under one mobile and web interface.

How it works
The system is built on Home Assistant running on a local hub, with a Zigbee coordinator handling battery sensors, switches and bulbs. Devices that speak other protocols come in through their own integrations, so the homeowner sees one list of rooms and devices regardless of who made them.
Automation logic lives in Node-RED. We chose it over hand-written scripts because the flows are visual, which means an installer can read and adjust a schedule or a presence rule without a developer. Python services cover the cases Node-RED handles badly, mainly the energy reporting. The iOS, Android and web clients all talk to the same local API.
The hard part
Mixed-vendor homes are messy. Two devices that both claim Zigbee support can still disagree about how they report state or how often they check in. A good share of the work went into a tested device list and per-device quirks handling, which is unglamorous and is also what makes setup go smoothly for the installer.
Control runs locally. Lights and heating keep working when the internet connection is down, and remote access is an extra on top instead of something the house depends on.
