Smart Garage Door Automation

Key Results & Impact
- Enhanced security with real-time alerts and access history.
- Increased convenience through remote mobile app control.
- Works with popular smart home platforms.
- Positive user feedback on ease of use and reliability in US suburban areas.
The Challenge
Homeowners in the USA sought a more secure and convenient way to manage garage access, often struggling with outdated remote systems and lack of monitoring.
Our Solution
We developed an IoT-powered system allowing users to control and monitor their garage doors via a mobile app. Features include real-time status updates, access logs, and integration with smart home ecosystems.
Technologies Used
- IoT Sensors
- MQTT
- React Native
- AWS IoT
- ESP32 Microcontroller
How it works
Each door gets a small controller built around an ESP32. A magnetic sensor tells it whether the door is open or shut, and a relay wired across the existing wall button lets it trigger the opener without modifying the motor unit. The controller holds an MQTT connection to AWS IoT and publishes a message whenever the door state changes.
The React Native app subscribes to those messages, which is why the status on the phone changes within a moment of the door moving. Commands travel the other way on a separate topic. Every open and close event is written to a log with a timestamp and the account that triggered it, and that log is what the access history screen reads.
The hard part
The awkward part of any remote door product is trust in the reported state. If the phone says "closed" and the door is open, nothing else about the product matters. So the controller reports what the sensor sees, never what it was last told to do, and the app shows a clear "unknown" state when a device has dropped off Wi-Fi instead of repeating the last value.
Garages also tend to sit at the far edge of a home network. The firmware reconnects on its own, queues the most recent state while offline, and takes updates over the air so fixes do not need a ladder.
