The Challenge

Designing an open-world game with unique flying car mechanics while maintaining performance and visual quality.

Our Solution

Created an open-world environment with physics-based flying car controls, dynamic weather, and an engaging storyline.

Technologies Used

  • Unreal Engine
  • C++
  • Blender
  • Substance Painter
  • FMOD

How it works

Built in Unreal Engine with C++, the game streams its open world in sections around the player. This matters more than usual here, because a flying car covers ground quickly and can see a long way from altitude. Distant terrain and buildings swap to simpler versions as they recede.

The vehicle has two handling models, one for the road and one for the air, and the transition between them is blended so that take-off feels like a single movement. Assets were made in Blender and textured in Substance Painter. FMOD drives the audio, including engine sound that responds to speed, load and height.

The hard part

Flight breaks many of the shortcuts open-world driving games depend on. You cannot hide loading behind a tunnel when the player can simply go up. Streaming distances, level-of-detail steps and draw-call budgets were tuned together, repeatedly, against the slowest hardware we intended to support.

The controls needed the same patience. Realiztic flight physics proved frustrating for most players, so the final model is deliberately forgiving: it keeps momentum and banking, and drops the parts of aerodynamics that only punish.
