Technologies Used
- Unity3D
- C#
- Python
- MongoDB
- Socket.io
- iOS
- Android
How it works
The client is Unity and C#. Everything that must be trusted happens on the server. Player cities, resources, clans and battle outcomes live in MongoDB behind a Socket.io layer that keeps connected players up to date as things change.
Battles are resolved on the server and streamed to both players. The client sends intentions, such as deploying a unit at a position, and draws what the server reports back. Python handles the work around the edges: matchmaking, scheduled events and the balance analysis that feeds each update.
The hard part
Any competitive game with an economy attracts cheating, and a client that is allowed to decide outcomes will be exploited within days. A server-authoritative design costs more to build and makes latency visible, so a lot of effort went into making the battle view feel responsive while it waits for confirmation.
Balance is the work that never finishes. Each new unit or building changes the value of all the others, which is why battle data is logged and reviewed before any tuning change ships.
