How the ROI is worked out
The cost side
Hardware is priced per device, with the unit price falling as volume rises. Platform software, infrastructure and integration are each estimated as a share of your stated budget, with a floor and a ceiling so that very small or very large budgets do not produce silly numbers. Staff training is added, then the total is scaled by rollout scope: a pilot costs roughly a third of a full single-site deployment, and a multi-site rollout costs more than one site. Annual maintenance is taken as 18 percent of hardware, infrastructure and software.
The savings side
Savings come from the four figures you enter: annual maintenance spend, monthly cost of downtime, energy spend and labor cost. The calculator applies a conservative reduction to each (18 percent on maintenance, 28 percent on downtime, 15 percent on energy, 12 percent on labor) and then weights them by use case. Predictive maintenance leans on the maintenance and downtime figures. Smart lighting leans almost entirely on energy.
Those percentages are planning assumptions, not promises. Real results depend on how good your baseline figures are and on whether people act on what the sensors report. If your downtime cost is a guess, the ROI is a guess too, so it is worth spending ten minutes with your maintenance records before you start.
Common questions
What payback period should I expect from an IoT project?
It varies widely by use case. Energy and lighting projects tend to pay back fastest because the saving starts on the first day. Predictive maintenance takes longer, since the system needs months of data before its warnings become reliable.
Should I start with a pilot?
Almost always. A pilot on one line or one building costs a fraction of a full rollout and replaces the assumptions in this calculator with your own measurements.
Does the estimate include ongoing costs?
Yes. Annual maintenance, taken as 18 percent of hardware, infrastructure and software cost, is subtracted from the savings before ROI and payback are calculated.
Is the calculator free?
Yes. We ask for a work email before showing the full analysis, and we use it to follow up on your estimate.
